'Schwarz' is the german word for 'black'. So the first word is simply a hint to my name.

The Golem is an artificially created being from the jewish mythology. It is made from clay and is a dumb servant who only can do what its master tells him. Computer programs are the same. They can only perform what the coder writes. Ok, often programs do other things than the coder intends but that is another story ;)

But there is also a connection to the human nature. Original versions of the bible describe Adam as the first Golem created by god. So we as humans are Golems ourselves, producing narrower Golems (programs). This leads to the following questions:

  • If it is recursive, is god a Golem to? Who made god?
  • Is the ability of life creation the difference between god and Golem?
  • Are programmers gods for their artificial life creations?
  • Will programs become god if they create artificial life themselves?

Tell me what you think...

Wow! What a great homepage! I read your minds about God and Golem - the questions are very mystical - and I will think about it - and I hope you will answer with your games (already one finished? - small one for me ...?
If you are interested in my opinion, tell me!
Last but not least: ALLES GUTE ZUR FIRMENGRÜNDUNG!

Liebe Grüße

Thanks!

Answering these question within a game is a great idea. My first game Nordenfelt: www.nordenfelt-thegame.com won't give answers, just tough challenges avoiding attacks and killing foes for making it to the end. Interpretation of this is up to you.

I wish I would have a small game for you but I'm concentrating on Nordenfelt: www.nordenfelt-thegame.com for now. Sorry.

Greetings Antipode ;)
Yes, my name is _also_ Thomas, though it's Thomas WHITE... lol, yes. And I think it really wonderful that I'm (also) an aspiring game developer (though I'm only just starting out and as yet have no creations other than ideas). Just wanted to encourage you and say hello. I came here via your musings on isometric game projects (was never bitten by shmups much as a kid, so Nordenfelt, though I love steampunk, isn't the reason I came here). I am starting out with Python (Pygame) because it's 'easy' though I would move to Java or even old-school C or C++ before I get 'serious'... What about you? Feel free to write me if you're also intrigued by this amusing coincidence :)

Kind regards,

Thomas

Hi there,

Indeed, funny coincidence.

If you're going for a new language other than Python I would suggest C++. It's maybe the mightiest game dev language available because it

- is very fast,
- can be used high-level as well as close to the metal,
- has free libs and tools en masse,
- has a large community,
- interfaces with many scripting languages (www.swig.org)

It's not the easiest language to learn. But when you understand C++ learning other modern languages is a breeze.

Briefly: it's the de facto language of game dev. I would not go below.

Cheers,
Thomas, the black
